I just cant believe that with the dearth of starting caliber quaterbacks in the NFL, no one seems to be interested in adding him to their roster even as a backup…. http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/how-it-all-went-wrong-in-arizona-for-leinart

Here we go again.  Last week I took a lot of garbage.  If you look at the NFL you’ll see that they go strictly by W-L and then alphabetically.  I go by W-L but the factor in PF-PA.  Thus a 2-2 team with a PF-PA of 123-92 will be above a 3-1 with a PF-PA of 83-61. Next week we’ll start the regular season. Just a note, picking every game, every week,  over the last five years I’ve ran  in the eighty percentile range.   San Francisco 49ers Minnesota Vikings Baltimore Ravens Green Bay Packers New Orleans Saints Pittsburgh Steelers Oakland Raiders New England Patriots Tennessee Titans Jacksonville Jaguars Arizona Cardinals Detroit Lions Tampa Bay Buccaneers Cincinnati Bengals Washington Redskins Buffalo Bills Atlanta Falcons New York Giants Cleveland Browns Denver Broncos San Diego Chargers Miami Dolphins Dallas Cowboys St. Louis Rams New York Jets Philadelphia Eagles Houston Texans Kansas City Chiefs Seattle Seahawks Carolina Panthers Chicago Bears Indianapolis Colts   Let the trash talk begin.

I cannot help but wonder if the Jets and their fans like how they are coming off in this years version of Hard Knocks. In know the buzz has been about Coach Dungy’s thoughts on Ryan’s vocabulary but I see another story developing. I have watched every season of Hard Knocks and I have never seen a team come away looking more cheap or maybe even greedy. I think it is safe to say that everyone knows the NFL is a business and realize the teams are run like fortune 500 companies.   Star players earn salaries compareable to what Enron paid there executives and like Enron it seems like the little people don’t matter. Don’t get me wrong, I know the other teams do the exactly the same thing but they hide it.  I also realize that the Jets have their own special type economic pressures that other teams who do not share a city with a historically more successful team might face. Not to mention the fact that they are in a business that relies on people having and using disposable income on the jets while living in one of the most expensive places to live in the country.   However, with some of the things they say, you have to wonder if they know the cameras are recording.  Look at what happened in episode 4 as an example.  Tannebaum and Ryan mention in conversation their goal is to pay their starters well but they want to have all of the back ups making their minimums.  Then they call Clemens the 3rd QB in and tell him that unless he agrees to for go his contract and accept him minimum, they will release him.  What are the chances of a 3rd string QB could find a team this late in the pre-season.  Lastly they tell a long time veteran wide reciever they are going to cut him but that they plan to re-aquire him after week 1 so they don’t have to pay him his salary because they need to have money available if Revis re-joins the team.  While all these cuts and claims are being made, ESPN starts recieving reports that Revis and the team are close to making a deal and he should be in camp the next day even though the team has refused to talk to Revis since the 1st week of training camp.   You hear people from reality shows complaining that the editors and producers twist minor problems into full scale crisis to increase ratings and that could be the case here.  However, to me is seems like there is something rotten in the state of the Meadowlands..

Chad is rapidly becoming the most egotistical moron in the NFL.  Should he score a touchdown against the Pats, debatable, he plans to “fire” one of the Minutemen’s rifles.  Should ANY of this happen, I hope that one of the Patriot defenders clocks this prima donna good.  On top of the fine Chad will get from Goodell.

To read it yourself, click here .   More typical responses from the new Teflon Don. Listening to him speak, you have to believe that, not only does crap not stick to him, but that it never should be associated with him in the first place. A classic Donovan response is to the question about his lack of knowledge of the NFL overtime rule. If you read his response, it was the referee’s fault, not Donovan’s.   And the lack of urgency at the end of their Super Bowl against the Pats? Well, they were unsure of TO’s status, they were trying to rotate players in and out, and, well, maybe the play calling was a little (my emphasis) slow.C’mon, Donovan. At that point in the game, trailing by 10, you should have had the entire series called on the sidelines. Every time in the huddle, two or three plays should have been called. Not once did you do the stand-up quarterback thing and admit that, as the “leader” of the team, it was your ultimate responsibility to get that offense running.   Could you imagine Brett or Peyton spouting even a little of the stuff that the press seems to swallow so easily when it comes out of McNabb. Jeez, Donovan is now a Redskin and he is still throwing his Eagles teammates under the bus.   Maybe now, the press and fans in Washington will finally understand what we in the Philly area have been saying all along about one of the greatest under achievers in memory: Donovan is a man with awesome skills but no heart. Otherwise, he would not have performed so miserably in the greatest games of his life. You don’t lose the NFC championship game three separate times when posted as the favorite and still claim to be a leader. But the press just keeps going along with him.

You can call him that. I, personally, call him a hell of a player, competitor and, YES, a businessman. I bet you fifty cents the team will reap benefits double or triple of the money he will earn, just by him showing up on the field. And the Vikes know that. It’s a win / win situation. The guy has made football FUN to watch. When he eventually retires, I’ll probably turn on the old movie channel instead of the NFL. Not really, my heart is with the Black and Gold from the ‘Dome. But still, there’s been only one Brett Favre.

With all the discussion about the greatest player/team here it always seems to come down to winning super bowls to many people.  Of course that ignores most of the history of the NFL but that is another discussion.  Here, I would like to know is winning the super bowl the indicator of greatness or is just getting there good enough?  This comes about in a discussion about Mr. Favre and his win loss record in the Super Bowl with a poster claiming Eli Manning is a better quarterback since he went to one and won it a 100 percent winning rate and Mr. Favre has lost one and won one a 50 percent winning rate.    This is not a discussion of Mr. Favre but it does bring to mind some quarterbacks that I would rank high on my list of greatest quarterbacks, Jim Kelly being a good example.  Never won a Super Bowl but went four times, in a row!  He played well in two, was a non-factor in one and probably lost another.  But I still consider him one of the greatest Super Bowl era quarterbacks.  I certainly believe winning one Super Bowl does not make you the greatest anything.  Any one game can be determined by luck.  That is why this question is being asked.  I believe if you are able to bring your team to the Super Bowl repeatedly, you deserve to be discussed among the greatest players/teams.   For the record I think looking only at the Super Bowl era is a stupid way of looking at this topic.  Some of the greatest players in the history of pro football are ignored.  However, push come to shove, I think Mr. Montana was the greatest Super Bowl era quarterback and Mr. Starr the greatest NFL Championship quarterback of all time.  So, is winning one Super Bowl like Eli Manning make him a greater quarterback than Jim Kelly?

I see in the AP poll thread that the incorrigible duck had to take a swipe at the ACC for havin’ five teams ranked.  Er, why shouldn’t they?  I still maintain that the ACC is the most exciting conference in college football.  What’s exciting about the SEC East?  Not much.  Florida wins, ho hum.  I’d love to see USC get competitive, but, it ain’t happened so far.  At any rate, the main gist of this is that in the ACC there is only ONE, what you’d call, open admissions school, that being NC State.  At EVERY other school in the WHOLE conference, you actually have to have a HIGH SAT score and must keep up your grades.  At these schools, admissions standards are, at a minimum, as high as Vandy’s or Stanford’s.  As much as I love college football, the MAIN purpose of college is to get an education, ie, the NFL only has a limited number of openings for the illiterates & thugs from other schools.

I just realized the other day how little I watch ESPN,  I was a kid when ESPN got started and I couldn’t get enough of it. I would watch Australian Rules football in the middle of the night and thought Sportscenter was the best thing ever. I hung in there over the years, still watching Sportscenter almost every day, It was funny how the announcers joked about being in crappy little Bristol Connecticut and talked about the Hartford Whalers.  I just can’t believe the crap they run these days, everything is a bunch of lights and theme music. I mean Sportscenter from Los Angeles ? Who gives a crap where people are sitting when they tell you scores ?  Being in Bristol was at least a little quirky and interesting should we be watching and thinking “Wow maybe Lindsay Lohan is going to show up all wasted”. It is Idiotic. All the stupid little talk shows they have, that one with newspaper writers on little monitors around the country giving their takes is ridiculous. I mean why can’t they have 4 writers sitting around a table talking ? They like give points and shut off peoples monitors, what a joke. The LeBron thing was the biggest joke of all. Fire that guy and the one that came up with NFL Primetime with like 12 guys telling football scores. Sometimes I didn’t even see Sunday highlights until halftime of MNF and that was cool with me. Time for TV. sports to go back to being simple and uncomplicated.

There are numerous teams in the NFL that Mcgahee would be there #1 running back…They are looking for a #1 corner back for him…I sure hope they don’t take less then a #1 like Champ Bailey for an example, now that would be interesting…
