Report: Bama commits recruiting violation with Sanders’ son PUBLISHED Sunday, Feb 20, 2011 at 8:32 pm EST

Alabama committed an NCAA violation when it showed a recruit on the video board at the university’s men’s basketball game on Saturday, according to The Oklahoman.

Barry J. Sanders, a junior running back at Heritage Hall High School in Oklahoma City, had made the visit to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for Alabama’s junior day.

The Oklahoman newspaper reported that Sanders – whose father is Pro Football Hall of Famer Barry Sanders — was shown on the video board sitting alongside Alabama coach Nick Saban. That prompted the Crimson Tide faithful to cheer and for the student section to start a “We want Barry!” chant.

NCAA rule 13.11.5 states: “An institution may not introduce a visiting prospect at a function (e.g., the institution’s sports award banquet or an intercollegiate athletics contest) that is attended by media representatives or open to the general public.”

SportsbyBrooks.com was told by a Southeastern Conference official that Alabama is aware of the violation and will report it to the NCAA this week.

Alabama’s courtship of Sanders also made news last month when Saban visited the recruit at his high school. Both Saban and the school said it was just a greeting, which is allowed and within NCAA guidelines.

Sanders is considered one of the top recruits in the class of 2012 and has Alabama, Florida State, Oklahoma State and UCLA as his favorites.
