The life of Dave Duerson, and what it tells us about the current NFL Lockout…..
“Friends of the 50-year-old said at the time of his death that though he fell on hard times later in life, he was engaged and had planned to marry later this year.
Before his death he asked that his brain be examined for chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a condition linked to more than a dozen dead NFL players.
Duerson retired from the NFL after 11 seasons and is thought to have suffered from the condition, which is linked to athletes who have sustained repeated concussions.”
It is stories like the one linked above that gives me pause when listening to some of the demands of the NFL owners one of which is, an extension of the NFL regular season from 16 to 18 games. Dave Duerson died in vitual anonymity as a direct consequence of the violence of the NFL and now the owners are asking for two more games…….What safety net should be in place to guard against cases like the one above and do you think that the players are right to refuse the owners demands?
